Child Centred Counselling for children & young people

Play Therapy

Play therapy is offered to children and young people in the same way that talking therapies are offered to adults, however instead of using speech as their main form of communication, children use play to express their feelings. The child or young person can choose to do what they want in their sessions, some like to draw, paint, use the sand trays or create role plays. There are just a few rules in the sessions to help the child, therapist and equipment stay safe.

Play therapy can help a child or young person recover from trauma, neglect, abuse, bereavement, family conflict or breakdown, parental depression, illness, disability or other challenging life experiences. Children and young people who take part in play therapy can learn to cope with difficult feelings (e.g. sadness, anger or shame) in healthier ways. It is common for challenging behaviours (e.g. verbal or physical aggression) to change over the course of the therapeutic intervention towards more manageable and socially acceptable ways of functioning. Some children and young people who have experienced play therapy have been able to feel more confident in themselves, understand confusing life experiences more clearly, engage more fully with peers and family members, develop more confidence and interest in school, and generally feel happier within themselves.
